Summary

The prerequisites of development of breeding of the farm animals in the Ukrainian SSR in the 30-80s of the XX century were highlighted. It was singled out the main stages of the development of the domestic breeding science during the period under study on base of retrospective analysis of the dominant methods of breeding and reproduction, the comparison of the structure of the gene pool of domestic breeds of cattle, the direction and effectiveness of the selection process. As one of the prerequisites for its development the author has considered improving the organizational structure of the breeding work. The main methods of breeding and reproduction of farm animals that were applied at each of the identified stages were summarized. Particular attention was paid to concretizing the achievements of Ukrainian scientists on the development of the theory and methodology of breeding of cattle.
